Tanya Y. Mitchell
Tanya Y. Mitchell is a retired Certified Public Accountant and Chief Financial Officer whose forty-two-year career spanned leadership roles in audit, accounting and financial management with Arthur Andersen & Co., Citibank, Manufacturers Hanover Bank, American Express Company, and Prudential Financial before transitioning to the nonprofit sector.
A proud graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Tanya credits Dean Quiester Craig with introducing her to the CPA profession and inspiring her to pursue the highest credential in the field—the Certified Public Accountant license. While a student at the business school from 1975 to 1979, she greatly benefited from his guidance, support, encouragement, and example. As a first-generation college graduate and the first in her family to enter corporate America, Tanya is living proof of how education and professional achievement can transform lives.
Her passion for bringing this story to life is deeply personal, rooted in both gratitude and loss, which inspired her to honor Dean Craig’s legacy by documenting his transformative leadership and his impact on institutions, people, and equity in business school education. As both a beneficiary of Dean Craig’s life's work and a witness to its lasting impact, she brings a unique perspective to this powerful and inspiring chronicle.
Born and raised in Roper, North Carolina, Tanya now resides in West Orange, New Jersey, where she enjoys gardening, golf, tennis, and reading. Through her debut book, More Than a Dean, she hopes to inspire students and young professionals to seize educational opportunities, seek mentorship, and follow their aspirations with purpose and persistence.
